The City of Weatherford Parks, Recreation and Special Events Department, along with the Parker County Gold Star Families, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars will break ground to begin phase one construction of the new Veterans Memorial at Soldier Spring Park on October 10. The groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 2:00 p.m. October 10, located at 200 Thrush Street. Parking will be available at 961 Charles Street with Shuttle Services beginning at 12:30 p.m. Ceremony will begin with the presentation of colors and recognition of key constituents, concluding with the ceremonial groundbreaking. The event will mark the beginning of construction for what will become a lasting tribute to all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice in defense of this great nation. Once complete, the Veterans Memorial at Soldier Spring Park will not be solely a memorial made of stone, but a place where anyone who has lost a member of the armed forces (whether from Texas or other parts of the country) can come to reflect and remember their loved ones, in a peaceful (off the beaten path) location. Parker County Gold Star Families, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars have a mission to develop the memorial in Soldiers Spring, which will serve as a testament to the strength and courage of fallen heroes. They have raised $64,000 for phase one of construction and are currently accepting donations to reach their total goal of $250,000 for completion of the project. ''We as business personnel or community leaders, who work and serve the great people of Parker County, Hood County and Palo Pinto County, owe a debt of gratitude toward the fine men and women who we will pay tribute to with this memorial. Also, as a veteran, I cannot think of any place that I would rather be than helping honor our fallen heroes'' said Jimmie L. Evans, Parker County Gold Star Family member.
